Monday afternoon when I returned from work it was to the sounds of the cat screaming and the dog snarling.
I rushed to my bedroom, dropping my purse and keys, opened the door and found that I had accidentally locked Spokane in the room with Israel. This has happened at least once before without any incident.
For some reason the moment I got home, after being in there for a full work day, something went terribly wrong.
Spokane was on the floor, trapped in the corner, I got Israel off of her expecting carnage.
All I found was blood from her mouth, her eyes dilated and glazed over, her fur wet. No puncture wounds–Israel’s face was red and covered in blood but that was his blood from her claws.
I locked him up and within a minute of returning home I was back out the door with her in my arms wrapped in a towel rushing to the vet to have her put to sleep–I knew there was no saving her.
She died in my arms less than a minute after I got to the vet, before there was a chance for them to do anything.
I buried her at my parent’s house since I don’t have a shovel.

I tried to process this, wrap my head around it.
Israel was raised with cats and otherwise ignored them. He and the others react the same on walks when they spot a stray cat, squirrel or bird. They want to chase it. Simona would chase the cat and I have no doubt she would’ve torn the cat apart if she had gotten hold of her. Israel suffocated her.
Taking a step back, examining what happened makes me come to one conclusion: she had nowhere to hide, when he mouthed her (which he has done before without aggression and she would get away because there was somewhere to hide and I was there to intervene–another reason I locked him in a room instead of just in a kennel he could break out of for everyone’s safety because he gets into the garbage, knocks things down, etc) she tried to get away as usual and when she couldn’t, her screams triggered him to not let go, but to increase his hold on her.
The strange thing is there was no outward damage. He crushed her chest easily as she was a small cat, still a kitten, but didn’t bite down hard enough to break skin.

I don’t think it was his intent initially to kill her. I think primal instincts took over when she screamed and cats ARE prey to dogs. Normally they were never alone with each other and it was entirely my fault for not realizing she snuck into my room that morning before I left for work–she did wear a collar with a bell on it, but being small she didn’t always make noise when she walked if she was moving smoothly enough.

Otherwise Israel’s behavior is unchanged. I don’t think he snapped, went crazy, whatever. I walk the dogs every day weather willing for several miles and I jog with them.

It was a very, very unfortunate, traumatic incident that I still can’t really wrap my head around nor can I get over the guilt I feel knowing that I shut the door, not giving a second thought that Spokane might’ve gone in my room.

What bothers me as well is that this happened JUST as I got home. She would have been dead if I hadn’t arrived right then. But I had to watch her die. I take little comfort knowing that I was holding her when she finally passed.

She was a very sweet cat. She liked to break the blinds to look outside and sit in the window to watch the birds. She liked to cuddle at night when I was on the computer. She deserved a lot better and I will always be sorry that she lost her life in a random, senseless way that I was responsible for.

There is so much else going on in my life that I still haven’t fully dealt with this. I tear up but don’t cry. I try to figure out what went wrong and why. I pray and hope that she didn’t suffer as much as I think she did, even though she died within five minutes and was unresponsive during that time.
